Our Team will contain and remove all bio-hazardous materials, disinfect the entire site (using approved industrial grade agents), and render the site free and clear of any bio-hazardous contamination.
When applicable, Oxus will invoice your insurance company directly for remediation and clean-up costs.
Bypass Wastes
By-pass wastes (namely chemotherapeutic and pathological wastes) represent a significant portion of the medwaste stream generated in Maine – on average 9% of the total medwaste volumes in Maine. (Nationally, this waste stream is closer to 5%.) This waste stream cannot be processed in the MHA facility and, by law, has to be incinerated out of state.
Environmental Initiatives
Reusable Containers: Thanks to the foresight of the Maine Hospital Association, approximately 10% of Maine’s medical waste was reduced in perpetuity the day hospitals began utilizing reusable plastic tubs in place of cardboard boxes. Even better, as medwaste generators adopt reusable sharps containers, this figure increases.
Greening Our Fleet: In the spring of 2008 Oxus converted its first truck to run on vegetable oil. As we continue to convert our trucks we aim to have a fossil-fuel-free enterprise by replacing nearly 2,000 gallons per month of diesel. Furthermore, we gladly accept spent vegetable oils from hospital cafeterias and other sources (during our regular pick-ups) which we then clean and use for fuel. Oxus will significantly reduce the energy surcharge assessed to generators in exchange for this byproduct – a reduction that results in considerable savings for our customers while reducing our carbon footprint.

Reusable Sharps Containers
Reusable sharps containers are an excellent means of both reducing costs while making a positive environmental impact.
We offer three sizes of reusable sharps containers: 3-gallon, 10-gallon and 17-gallon.
A key component in the cost savings is the removal of many small containers by utilizing a single larger one. By simply placing a 3-gallon container where a 5-quart container existed, the disposal cost per container is greatly decreased. With the high cost of today’s plastics and the disposal costs associated with it, a reusable container is a simple program to justify.
Billing is tied to directly to actually usage—typically at a fraction of the cost of a disposable container.
An Oxus representative will gladly discuss the benefits of this simple program and the long-term economic and environmental savings you can expect with its use.
